God is a GM

最近看了一篇文章。题目是How to fail as a photographer。其中第二点说到"start a blog".

仔细看下去,发现作者也是比较实际的人。他的理由是:There are two reasons for a blog: 1. You have something incredibly interesting that people just can't stay away. 2. SEO. You can't fall into category 1. And you never will.

A touch of existential malaise courtesy of late capitalism. You know, the usual.

In movies, everything is simple. In real life, not so much.

Everyone is endowed by The Creator with certain unalienable Rights, among them Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness.

But can people give up those rights? Can you force a men to live, to be free and to pursuit happiness? That would be rather difficult.

Imagine: You are playing chess with a GM. You're in a bad position. Hopeless position. Will you just resign, or continue to play for a draw? I personally think it's better to just resign. That's the more respectful way. Both to yourself and to your opponent.

Fight if you have a fighting chance. Otherwise, you're just being disrespectful to yourself and your opponent. It's like saying: I know you're gonna make a stupid mistake and draw the game. It's just not the right thing to do.

And the right way to learn chess is to presume that all you opponents are GMs. Even computers. So you don't use cheap traps to win the game just for the sake of winning. You play the prudent moves, the right moves. If your opponent plays a blunder, exploit it. But don't presume so.

Winning is not everything. That's how you can cope with losing. Everybody loses. Even computer loses (for instance, to faster computers).

It's not that I don't appreciate the beauty of the world. I just appreciate something else even more.

MGS series is over. Hideo Kojima probably won't make another MGS. And even if he did, would I play it? I don't know. All good things must come to an end. And bad things too.

It's interesting how people fear mass possession of guns and nuclear proliferation. Because people know: if they had the power, they will do the unthinkable. They know what they are. They are afraid of power in their own hands.
